wilde thing

I can’t believe I hadn’t read anything by Oscar Wilde until now. In my Victorian Decadence class, we read
Picture of Dorian Gray and I loved it. A little dark and twisty. A lot of sarcastic wit. And like most famous writers, he has a life that is more interesting than fiction. I find him fascinating. We just read “The Importance of Being Earnest” and it has the same wit but almost slapstick humor. So today I went to Borders and picked up his book of fairy tales. I want to get in a little more levity before we dive into his “De Profundis”.

Speaking of levity, a classmate brought in her Oscar Wilde action figure! I was so jealous. He has his signature green flower pinned to his lapel. And on the back of the package, some of his famous Wilde-isms.

Work is the curse of the drinking class.”

“A true friend stabs you in the front.”

“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.”

“It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious.

Oh Oscar. If only you were alive today.
